Yvon Chouinard visits Patagonia, Reno

Yvon Chouinard founder of Patagonia visited the Patagonia Distribution Center in Reno, Nevada May 27th, 2010.  I was impressed by how down to earth he was and by his commitment to the environment.  Patagonia's mission statement, the reason he created the company, is to:

"Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis."

After 30 years,  Patagonia still builds the best product, does its best to cause the least harm to the environment and consistently uses its business model to inspire and fund grassroots environmental causes worldwide.  The company has given over $35 million in cash and product to over 1,000 organizations.  Patagonia's line of clothing contains increasing percentages of recycled content, and is largely recyclable (including Patagonia® fleece, Polartec® fleece clothing from any maker, Patagonia cotton T-shirts, as well as polyester and nylon 6 products which carry a Common Threads tag).

To hear him speak in such a candid manner was engaging, but it wasn't like he was trying to force his politics on you.  He is a gifted storyteller and a motivating speaker as well.  I took a bit of video as he visited with employees at the distribution center.  In this first clip, he talks about how his life has changed recently, and what he is focusing on now to inspire other businesses to green their business models.

Yvon Chouinard DC I

Make sure and check out YC DC II soon.  In that episode I ask Yvon, "Is everything TM told me about you true?"  Yvon responds with a classic story about TM.

SWIP Trip: Following the Path of Wise Resistance

From your favorite FSTPKR TWIT one last post on the SWIP!  Sorry to be putting up so many press links, but I am very busy right now with speaking engagements.  Tonight REI here in RENO.  For those that have been following the FSTPKR plunge into film, Fastpacking the Crest is done.  My first presentation of it went really well in my opinion.  The Tahoe Rim Trail Association is having me back September 24th-25th.  I will be presenting the 2010 Tahoe Rim Ski Tour on the 25th.  I am looking forward to this presentation as well as working on a film of it as it was all shot in HD.  Better quality video.  Lake Tahoe in winter is crazy pretty too!  I hope to have Fastpacking the Crest replicated and available for purchase shortly.  Give me a shout if anyone is interested in a copy.  Also for those that work at the Patagonia DC, I will be presenting Fastpacking the Crest on June 9th noon to 1PM.  Brownbag style so bring lunch and refreshments.  No cold bean sampling this time!
